‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Reveals New Title, ‘The Last Jedi’
It sounds like the dark side is going to kick some ass, and that means the sequel to “The Force Awakens” might have quite a bit in common with “The Empire Strikes Back” when it hits theaters in December.
The newest Star Wars film has an official title—and it could signal a sinister future for the heroes of the galaxy.
The official Star Wars Twitter page on Monday released a photorevealing the movie’s official title: Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The follow-up to the smash hit Star Wars: The Force Awakens was expected to have a darker tone than the first installment of the new trilogy, and this title reflects that:
In the original trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back showcased a renewed strength from Darth Vader and the Empire after the Rebels scored some wins in Star Wars: A New Hope. The new trilogy could be tracking a similar story arc, with the second film showing a bounce back for the sinister First Order, who suffer a major defeat in The Force Awakens when (SPOILER ALERT, OBVIOUSLY) the fledgling Resistance destroys their planet-killer weapon.
The real question is: Who is the last Jedi? Does it refer to Luke Skywalker, seen (AGAIN, SPOILERS) at the end of The Force Awakens being given his long-lost lightsaber by Rey (Daisy Ridley) on a seculded planet? Or does it hint that Rey, Finn (John Boyega), or someone else could be the “last” Jedi in the galaxy? Heck, maybe it means that a new group of Jedi will rise up and take on the First Order and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), now that Luke is back in the fold.
Either way, the title is badass, and this film could be an even bigger hit than The Force Awakens was at the end of 2015.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson and starring Ridley, Isaac, Boyega, Hamill, Driver, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, and the late Carrie Fisher, will be released on December 15, 2017.
