WHEN TO GO
The gastrocnemius is located on the back of the lower leg. It is composed of two heads, the medial (inner) gastrocnemius, which starts from the inner part of the femur (thigh bone), and the lateral (outer) gastrocnemius, which starts from the outer part of the femur. Both heads converge onto the Achilles tendon, which attaches to the heel bone. The gastrocnemius works to perform plantar flexions, which is the scientific term for extending the ankle, such as during calf raises. — Jim Stoppani, PhD
