For as long as I can remember, I have been a health and fitness enthusiast. In 1975, at 16 years old, one of my favorite television programs was The Jack LaLanne Show, as Jack was a leader and expert in fitness, exercise, and nutrition. One day I decided to call the television studio where they filmed the show. I left a message with the receptionist and to my great surprise, Jack LaLanne himself called me back! I asked Jack all kinds of questions about diet and exercise and he graciously answered them all.
Following that initial conversation, Jack and I became great friends and he continued to share his invaluable knowledge with me. In 1982, Jack invited me to visit the home he shared with his wife Elaine in Hollywood Hills. Of course I flew to California and took him up on his offer. After introducing me to Elaine, Jack brought me to his home gym where he put me through a workout, coaching me on proper form and offering training tips along the way. This was a life-long dream come true!
After my trip to California, I began calling Jack every two weeks for additional nutrition and training advice. Utilizing the knowledge that he passed on to me, I was able to grow my biceps to 18” and I was able to increase my quarter squats to 500 lbs. One of the best tips I ever got from Jack was to rotate my training style every two weeks. For two weeks, Jack had me train with low reps (5-8 per set) and heavy weight to gain size and strength. Then for the following two weeks, Jack had me train with high reps (15-20 per set) and lighter weight to increase my endurance and definition.
Combining that training style rotation, along with his tip of frequently alternating exercises to hit the body from different angles, Jack LaLanne has helped me stay in great shape and continue making improvements to my physique, even to this day.
